The principle behind illuminated teeth is that demineralized areas of the Enamel or dentin scatter the light more strongly than healthy hard tooth substance= loss of intensity due to light scattering (Pretty, Maupomé, 2004)1.

Indication  

Caries diagnosis for occlusal surfaces, approximal surfaces, but not for secondary caries at filling edges.
